St Magdalena Winery in the Dolomites

Not only do we love to run our Dolomites walking holidays and hike in some of the most stunning mountain scenery to be had, but we also have a passion for the region’s delicious wines.

The St Magdalena winery has been at the pinnacle of Alto Adige’s production for a very long time. The current Kellermeister (winemaker) Stephan Filipi, enjoys a huge reputation in Italy and abroad, and has served proudly, since 1988.

Check Out the Wine Cellar of the Hotel Digon

Before him his father was Kellermeister – father and son have served for a combined total of about 55 years. At the Hotel Digon in Ortisei they have an amazing wine cellar with many coming from the St Magdalena winery which is only about 30km from the hotel.

The most famous wine of St Magdalena winery is the Taber Lagrein. It is grown in the valley floor, practically in the town of Bolzano and it’s delicious.

We always drive to the Dolomites. Our journey along the Brenner Pass between Innsbruck and Bolzano has acres upon acres of meadows covered with vines. Sadly we cannot find the wines of Alto Adige in the UK. The suppliers are too small to cope with the quantities. So our Dolomites walking breaks have to be a combination of awesome walking and enjoying some very fine food and wine.
