Ortisei Italy

Ortisei Italy A Street Scene

Ortisei Italy is famous for its ornate woodcarvings and the lovely pedestrian area with great shops and cafés. This idyllic part of Val Gardena in the Italian Sud Tyrol is a wonderful place for a walking holiday. Ortisei is 1,236m above sea level and is the largest village in Val Gardena; it has a population of around 5,750.

The first language spoken is Ladin which is a mixture of Latin and Celtic. Next most popular is German and then Italian. When we first visited, many years ago, we decided to try and learn some Italian. We soon realised German would have been a better option.

School for Wood Carvers

The men in Ortisei Italy have a fine reputation for their skills with wood. Of the many wood carvers in the valley, some developed into true artists. In order to raise the general standard, local people founded an art school. Today wood carving is a modern industry and a genuine craft at the same time, producing individual, varied and authentic specimens of the art.

We have been coming here for many years and our love of the majestic Dolomites has never left us, so running our Dolomite walking holidays from here was never in doubt.

Choosing the right hotel was the difficult part as the standard of food and cleanliness everywhere is first class, however a stay at the Hotel Digon made our minds up very quickly. The hotel is run by Daniel Stufflesser and family. They are dedicated to offering you excellent service, accommodation and food. We find it so much better than anything we have ever experienced, we feel have become part of their family.

As guests in the Dolomites, you will be blown away by the scenery, the hotel and staff. All adding up to a wonderful walking week. Whether you’re a walker or a sightseer, Ortisei Italy is a beautiful place to visit, it’s one of Pinnacle Walking Holidays favourite places.
