Another of my favourite walks to take our guests who are on a Chamonix Walking Holiday is the route to Montenvers from Plan de l’Aiguille.
Starting from the Aiguille du Midi cable car station in the centre of Chamonix we take the lift to the mid station at Plan l’Aiguille where lots of those on a Chamonix Walking Holiday start, we are no exception.
Before heading off, it’s always worth waiting a few minutes to see if there are any marmots playing in the rocks below the refuge.
The path is easy to follow, descending to the Chalet du Plan de l’Aiguille which has a stunning view down to Chamonix several thousand feet below. From here the track traverses across the mountainside, up and down on easy gradients before reaching a path junction.
We take the right fork uphill on a series of zig zags, reaching a fairly level path which leads to Signal Forbes (named after James Forbes a 19th century geologist).
This is a magical place to stop on a Chamonix Walking Holiday, with tremendous views down to the Mer de Glace and the Grandes Jorasses in the distance. Above Alpine Choughs whirl through the sky looking for any scraps of food.
An easy path downhill with fabulous views of the Mer de Glace leads to the station at Montenvers the finish of the walk. We then take the train back to Chamonix.
